MEET KIM

CommunityGarden.jpg

My name is Kim Daughtry,  I am running for my fifth term as a Lake Stevens City Council Position 1 and humbly ask for your support.

Having served almost 16 years so far, I have seen significant changes and challenges in our city. When I first arrived on the council the city grew, from then 7500 population, to an additional 10000 over night with an annexation.  That annexation was voted on by the people in that area to become part of our wonderful city.  Since then we have had more annexations and some tremendous growth. You see building going on all around us and for a while we were the fastest growing city in the State. We are now over 42,000 and are  now the fourth largest city in the county!

With that much growth and at that fast pace there are bound to challenges. And we experienced many. Transportation is still in my opinion a very large challenge for most of us. I have spent the past 16 years at the very heart of the transportation challenges. I serve on several transportation committees in the region and am the Secretary of the Board for Community Transit. I have worked closely with the House and Senate Transportation Committees each year to get funding for city projects such as the Highway 9/204 intersection as well as the entire Connecting Washington legislation. You see the transportation problems in other areas affect our transportation problems here. The transportation system is just that - a system. When you fix one thing it affects the system somewhere else. I continue to work on the Trestle. (don't get me started . . . .)

I am an advocate for our city parks working with the mayor and the others on the council and city staff to acquire more open space for parks as well as upgrading the parks we already have. Lundeen Park was a very dark and little used space. Now it is vibrant with many users all year long. North Cove park has been transformed into a beautiful place to rest and see the lake with The Mill in the background being a very useful public venue for many activities such as the Farmer's Market and other events that will soon be coming to the revitalized downtown area. I have been a staunch supporter of starting a city parks department and within the last couple of years I and the rest of the council and city staff, made that happen. â€‹

Public Safety is the paramount duty for any municipality. I am proud to say that we have a police department that is looked up to by their peers in other cities around us. It wasn't always that way. We strive to hire the right people and give our police department the tools they need to do their jobs safely. We also invest in training for our officers and with everything going on in the nation of late, training is more important then ever.

While on the subject of national news. I want to state that I believe EVERYONE should be treated with respect. Everyone in our nation regardless of ANY label that may be used for them is equal in my eyes. There are groups of people in our society that have trouble with some others. That needs to stop. If there is anyone in our city that feels they need help, they should reach out and let me or let us know.  No-one should feel unsafe in our community and if they do I want to know so we can fix it. We are ranked one of the safest cities in the state. And our crime rate reflects that. But it only takes one incident to make a person or a group of people uncomfortable. And that needs to be rectified.

I am running for re-election to my council seat because I feel deeply for our city and I want to see it and everyone in it thrive.  I would appreciate your vote in November.
